SYMBOLS & ICONS:

Maria often depicted herself as a mermaid seeking salvation and redemption. An earlier self-portrait has her flailing in the water with her arm held up in the air has the caption: I’m not waving… (Inspired by the poem Not Waving but Drowning by British poet Stevie Smith.)

MATERIAL NOTES:

Small sea shells are adhered to the plate.
